Clinicians working in the field of substance abuse tend to approach this work from a foundation of substance abuse intervention and an individual treatment framework, even when family involvement is thought to be crucial. Clinicians working with a relational frame tend to struggle with how to address substance abuse when it becomes a significant issue with a particular individual the family.

This training seeks to integrate these ostensibly divergent treatment frames. Drawing from the combination of my experience working in an outpatient substance abuse treatment program and my training and practice in a relational approach, I will guide clinicians in cultivating a greater range of skills to address substance abuse and support families in adapting to the pressures of addiction and treatment. I will provide an overview of key ideas, terms and treatment approaches and we will explore dilemmas that arise in combining these two frameworks. Much of the training will involve group discussions, case presentation and experiential exercises to explore the training content.
Training Objectives

  • Provide education regarding dynamics of addiction and common treatment contexts and modalities
  • Help clinicians understand more what it means to work relationally in the context of substance abuse.
  • Help clinicians to identify opportunities to put addiction in its place by externalizing the problem, elevating resiliencies in the family and nurturing relationships.
  • Learn some common ways that substance abuse shifts family dynamics
  • Help clinicians to identify their shifting roles as related to the various stages of substance use and recovery
