Intensive Outpatient Program [IOP]

Our renowned, flagship program, Freedom Institute's Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can be the next phase of treatment for clients who have completed inpatient treatment or the first step in recovery for individuals who want to achieve sobriety and are unable to do inpatient. The IOP is our most involved treatment path, with three group sessions per week and weekly individual psychotherapy session for those who do not already have an individual therapist. The clinical foundation of our IOP is our unique integration of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Relational Family Therapy, which helps individuals and their families in the recovery process. Clients develop the skills needed for distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.

IOP groups and services include:

  • DBT Skills Training

  • Process Group

  • DBT Skills in Action

  • Individual Therapy

  • Family Therapy

  • Psychoeducation

  • Psychodrama

  • Mindfulness Meditation

  • Yoga

  • Art Therapy

  • Drug Testing

Mixed Goals IOP [Harm-Reduction Informed]

The Mixed Goals  IOP is designed to provide a caring, structured, and intensive treatment experience for clients who want to clarify their relationships to substances, may not want to commit to abstinence or are ambivalent about their long-term goals in relation to substance use.   The goal of the program is to support clients in becoming clear about their ideal, healthiest relationship to substances and other risky behaviors whether that is abstinence or safe, moderate, non-problematic use. The program also focuses on helping clients gain greater emotional stability in their lives and develop long-term plans regarding substance use and other relevant emotional and lifestyle issues.

The clinical recommendation for the IOP is  12 weeks (36 sessions), with a minimum requirement of 8 weeks (24 sessions). Graduation is based on participation in all sessions, completion of the DBT skills curriculum, achievement of their personal treatment goals, and involvement with a support network. Clinical team evaluation in collaboration with the client may indicate the need for a longer stay in IOP. After completing IOP, Clients are then recommended to step down to advanced outpatient groups.

After an initial assessment, clients will complete a DBT commitment session and an IOP orientation session. These two sessions are both a continuation of the assessment process and the entry point to IOP, in order to acclimate the client to the program and treatment at Freedom.
