Ellen Kessel, Ph.D.

Dr. Kessel will lead research initiatives at Freedom Institute to advance the science and practice of harm reduction therapy, demonstrating the efficacy and mechanisms of change behind innovative, compassionate approaches to helping individuals and families facing addiction and mental health challenges.

With extensive experience examining the etiology, course, and treatment of mental health disruptions, Dr. Kessel has explored the intricate interplay of factors shaping developmental pathways and mental health outcomes. Her postdoctoral work at Columbia University Irving Medical Center emphasized the intergenerational transmission of mental health challenges and resilience, highlighting the importance of interventions that break negative cycles and promote family wellness.

Dr. Kessel's clinical experience, ranging from inpatient units to private practice, provides a rich understanding of the real-world challenges faced by those struggling with mental health and addiction. This practical perspective informs her research, ensuring that her scientific inquiries are grounded in the most pressing needs of patients and clinicians.

Dr. Kessel earned her Ph.D. from Stony Brook University, completed her internship at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Behavior, and holds a B.A. from Columbia University.

Underpinning Dr. Kessel's work is a commitment to expanding access to mental health care and improving lives. She believes that by seeking to understand each person's unique circumstances with empathy and compassion, we can develop more effective, personalized approaches to care.
